Let me know in this thread what you think sucks and what you think should change in TWHL4 before it goes live.

Do you mean the [IMG] tag on your profile page? The tags are lower case only at the moment (needs to be [img] instead), but I could change them. I have some dead tags on my profile as well but those will be fixed manually. Are there any other cases?

Just checking, is there support for embedded videos such as YouTube videos or direct links to say .mp4 or .webm files? Heck, even supporting them or .gif files as the previews for maps in the map vault?

This is an embedded YouTube
Yes you can embed YouTube and mp4/webm files, but no you can't use them for vault thumbnails. You can include them in vault descriptions though. You can see all the details for how to format everything at TWHL: WikiCode Syntax.

Haha, you sure do, pebs, you crazy nut!

I don't know if I should create a thread or journal to test this, but can we edit our posts now even if someone else have posted after? Also, have the BBCode tag list been moved?
Posted 3 months ago2017-12-24 14:37:13 UTC Post #338490
The front page says "New Notifications" and "New Private Messages" regardless of whether there are any new ones, which is misleading.
I note that dm_arena is on the front page due (presumably) to it being recently updated. I feel like maybe a new map should be differentiated from updated maps in some way?
All the comments (like this one) have those clickable comment numbers on them that... well, do those do anything? I guess those do serve a purpose of linking someone to a particular comment. On the other hand, maybe those numbers should be thread/journal/whatever-specific, because post #39million or whatever doesn't mean anything.
The competition pages have big "View Results" buttons while the results are in fact on the same page.

I edited this after your comment below, Orange-man.
And again. Explain that!

I can see now that I can in fact not edit my post after someone else have posted in between. It's a useful feature to have if you need to update factual information, or the first post in a thread for various reasons.

Are we supposed to no longer have a BBcode tagging box? Right now no matter where I post it looks like this:
User posted image
I know it's all there in the wiki, but having in the new post form was a quick way to get a reminder of stuff you don't use often without having to open up a new tab.

Also, I know you said it was going away a long time ago, but I miss the orange - right now TWHL4 looks like the interior of an Apple store. shudder A touch more colour would be nice, right now the site feels a bit...sterile.
EDIT: Also, I realize of course this is just a beta, but the lack of Christmas Cat saddens me :(

On a less nitpicky-note, would it be possible for us to get a comment indicator on journals again, or some kind of notification if it was our journal that got commented on? If I made a journal about a thing and someone has a question to ask I would hate to not answer it because I just wasn't made aware anyone had engaged with the post.

Also, I know this is probably for mobile-friendliness, but there's just a bunch of white space on the sides when the Shoutbox is minimized. (and it also took me a few minutes to find it - I thought it had been cut!) On one hand it makes the site look really clean, but on the other hand it makes it feel empty.

You could subscribe to the journal to get notifications, but yes, comment indicator would be nice. Even better though it would likely be some work an indicator of whether there's been more comments/posts since you last viewed any given thing.
Also, I just encountered a quirk of the mark up. That was not intended to be struckthrough. Not everyone knows how to summon an em dash at will! (I do, but not on this device.)

Hmmm. Will dash-usery make a normal sentence buggered-up?

The new design ain't bad although I must admit I don't feel as comfy here as I did on the old page. Consequently as it is now I dislike it.
It misses personality in its current format and color settings. While I realize that this is just a beta - beta still suggests that it is closer to a final product than being a WIP.

What I miss most on this new version is the selection menu on the left side and the shout box as well. I understand that it is now up top in a simple button selection menu.
But for me personally it feels uninviting. The warmth the old site portrayed is entirely gone on this new page.

I feel more like browsing on some sterile - pale company business website and not like browsing a fan page of one of our most favorite video games.

-Simple but yet effective design. Unfit for a video game though. More fitting for any business related web sites.
-No heart or soul currently present and accounted for. (rather stale)
-Repetitive in color selection. (White wow)

Once more I realize that this isn't finished and you showed the link to the public in order to collect people their opinions and find bugs. This is my opinion here to that page design. I'm sure that this wasn't the feedback you were hoping for. But I better be honest here than lying to you and myself. So good luck I hope you will keep working on it.

Best regards

I understand that it's plain but I've not been able to get any design help at all and I'm no artist. Do you have any suggestions on how to add "heart and soul" to the design?
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 3 months ago2017-12-25 03:33:56 UTC Post #338499
I am a little peatot, sort and shout!

As for adding some "soul" to the design, a little color goes a long way.

Bring back some deep saturated orange, don't be afraid to splash some vibrancy. Be a Fauve!

In addition, adding some non-distracting graphical background (perhaps screenshots from Half-Life) to the header also helps.
Posted 3 months ago2017-12-25 04:33:11 UTC Post #338500
Yap Satchmo is correct... I'd try to find a good and proper balance between the old page style and the new design.
Pictures, colors are just the tip of the iceberg. I wish I could help you out but I'm not a website designer myself so ya..

Just imagine it like hl mapping.. You got this totally white wall how will you texture the different layers to make it good looking and unique while maintaining functionality and pleasantness for the eyes? :)

I'd suggest to go check out website designer forums to get some input, advice or perhaps help even. Twhl is focused on game modding. Other communities are focused on website design etc. pp. )

Some changes I am trying out. Better or worse? Obviously the header/nav thing, but also the border around the whole page and I changed the background colour on each second post. There would be multiple different images in the header, the one I picked was just a random one for testing purposes.

I like the banner background, but I think it would be better if it's slightly blurred and the colors desaturated.

May I suggest using a screenshot from the train station in City 17 at the beginning of HL2? It's nice and orange, which fits into the overall theme cohesively.

As for the border, it's a good start, but I'd like to see more orange in the background.
Posted 3 months ago2017-12-25 11:09:59 UTC Post #338503
The header pictures would be made by Strider once a design is nailed down, these are just temporary. I made the headers orange too, how's that?
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 3 months ago2017-12-25 11:13:42 UTC Post #338504
I'm not a fan of the "see all" button on each of the header sections, I'd suggest instead that if you either click on the header text or the header itself, it would follow the same action as clicking "see all" and would declutter the front page a tad

Posted 3 months ago2017-12-26 01:23:21 UTC Post #338507
I like the new changes. Maybe make the background darker/more contrasted from the content?
Also, re the competition page: have you considered building a comment section/thread page into there? (Considering there’s always a dedicated discussion thread.)
Also, re private messages: The “Welcome Back” panel shows how many new private messages you’ve gotten total. There isn’t a count on individual PM threads though. So you can click on your, say, 5 new private messages, but only have two threads with new messages and no indicator of how those new messages are allocated.
Also, re notifications: Should multiple notifications for the same thread/poll/whatever only form one notification? Multiple notifications for one source seems redundant.

Since every post in the forums have a unique ID now, I think that clicking on a forum notification should take you to the first new post in that thread since the last time you visited the thread rather than taking you to the last page.

Does that matter? It's not really an active part of the site anymore, and half the old video reviews have been deleted.

How about customizable colours for the polls? Looking at the "Shades of blue" poll and it not just being those shades of blue bothers me. (Maybe also some colour indicator on the listed results, so that you don't have to mouse over to see which section is which.)

Fantastic work on the enhancements.. Now this looks a whole lot closer to twhl.. I like it a lot.

Create some additional main page logo headers and let em display dynamically when entering the site.

Eventually draw the separation lines of the user their posts a little thicker other than that I'm truly satisfied now. Good work.

As a very very very old man and a full time stupid I have to second this. I think I am one of those rare, alien freaks that actually clicks the BBCode tags to add them into the post, rather than typing them out. The smilies especially. The only one I remember is my :rly: smily but it seems he didn't make the cut... :(

I think the notification system currently seems a bit odd. If there have been multiple posts on a single thread since you last visited it, it will count as multiple notifications instead of just one that shows how many posts there have been. Also, as I said earlier, I think it would be a good idea to make notifications link directly to the first new post since every post have an ID now.

Hello PB

How Are You

I am well

This website is turning out nicely

You have put in a lot of hours
we all appreciate it
Why the fanciness?
I'm just testing some of the BB code button functionality.
And I'm BORED

Cool how headers still work in the columns

we all appreciate that too
you can even do math without triggering more headers 3+6 = chair
